Gretchen Wegner, M.Ed.

I help overwhelmed students de-stressify school so that they can rock their grades and have a life too. I also train educators to inspire students to study strategically, and I mentor new academic coaches as they launch their own thriving academic coaching businesses. When I'm not changing the world one creative study strategy (and time management tool!) at a time, you'll find me swing dancing, camping, and walking around Lake Merritt in my beloved home of Oakland, California.

About this course

Research reveals a slightly annoying truth:

Most students aren’t taught how to study (even though many teachers think that's what they're doing). Furthermore,  strategies that students devise on their own, like re-reading the textbook, don’t work.

And yet:

Brain science points to specific, easy-to-implement (and even motivating!) study strategies that are proven to help students learn effectively, if only teachers and students knew them!

If the science of learning is so clear, and the strategies so simple, why is it missing from our schools?

What if a new approach to teaching study skills could ignite the learning revolution we’ve all been waiting for?!

Welcome to Anti-Boring Study Skills: A Masterclass!

In this 1.5 hour online workshop, you will learn:

  • Common learning myths that well-meaning teachers perpetuate
  • The neuroscience behind what the brain actually needs in order to learn
  • A simple 3-step model for how to teach the science of learning to students
  • Easy classroom routines that improve students’ ability to study effectively
  • Practical study strategies that any student can use to ace their next test
  • The links between executive functions, emotional regulation,  and studying
  • and more!

This masterclass is geared for classroom teachers and school-based educators. However, anyone invested in teaching and learning will walk away with practical tools -- parents, students, academic coaches, educational therapists, and more.

A few extra notes:

  • If you can’t attend the call live, no worries. There will be a recording posted in the online portal, which you can access at brainjazz.net after you register.
  • Please post all your questions about studying inside the online portal. Do this two days prior to the masterclass, if you'd like your specific questions addressed.
  • Educators, you are encouraged to practice teaching your students more about study skills in the weeks following this masterclassThat way you can ask Gretchen questions at her next office hours, to troubleshoot issues and celebrate successes. Although it is not required to come to office hours, it is highly encouraged.
  • Most ages welcome. This workshop is designed for teachers, but it has been presented to students 9th grade and older, and is accessible to 6th grade and up. So parents, if you want to attend with your student, you are welcome.  Or if you are a college age or an adult learner, you will get a lot out of it, too!
  • Parents, please attend with your students and with the goal of improving your own learning skills, as well as helping your student improve theirs. It will be a better learning experience for both of you if you wear your  “learner hat,” too.
  • Need PD? A certificate proving up to 2 hours of professional development will be available for all educators who work through the materials.
  • Want to bring your entire staff? Please reach out to officewiz@gretchenwegner.com to find out how to purchase multiple passes for your faculty.

Still wondering if this will work for you?? Here are still a few more things to know!

I’ve already taken your Anti-Boring Approach and/or Art of Inspiring Students. I know it already.

Great! Then you already know the importance of repetition and variety to learning. Consider this Masterclass an opportunity to "encode in a new way" Gretchen's latest thinking about studying, the science of learning, and executive functions.  As you probably know, Gretchen is obsessed with finding the simplest, most direct way to teach a topic, and she's constantly honing to find the least teachers and students need to know to have maximum results. You'll definitely walk away with new golden nuggets.

Why are students invited if it's geared towards classroom teachers? Is it really student-friendly?

A fundamental Anti-Boring philosophy is that students and teachers are partners in teaching and learning. So why not talk to you both at once? In all Gretchen's masterclasses, she first models how to teach students (this is the "student-friendly" part), and then she breaks down the pedagogy of what she just taught so teachers can pass it along to their students (this is the faculty-friendly part). Also, it’s a super power of Gretchen's to teach in a way that speaks to multiple identities at once!! Seriously, Gretchen's got mad skills in this regard. ;-) So students, come learn about how to study more effectively while teachers are learning how to teach study skills — at the same time! Everyone is welcome.

Can't wait to meet you and help you teach... and get better grades... the anti-boring way!

Here's to changing the world one creative study skill at a time!
